Symbiotic Connections

Artist Statement

The interconnectedness of ecosystems have always captivated me. From the way worms burrow toward nutrient-rich soil to how butterflies pollinate wildflowers, nature’s intricate systems have been a fascination of mine. Growing up in the mountains, I was surrounded by organic shapes, textures, and patterns that continue to inspire my creative practice.

My work explores the delicate symbiotic relationships that sustain the natural world. Mycelium, the underground network of fungi, guides forest life to nutrient rich soil. Bark beetles seek these nutrients for food and shelter. In the process of inhabiting these trees, they carry fungal spores on their legs, spreading mushrooms. Flammulated owls, a threatened species found in the Western U.S. and Mexico, rely on these beetles as a food source, illustrating the interdependence within nature. These small yet essential creatures play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance.

Through a variety of media including ceramics, painting, and photography, I am able to translate these unseen connections into tangible forms, offering a glimpse into the intricate beauty of nature’s hidden systems. By focusing on the minute details often overlooked, my work encourages a deeper appreciation for the delicate relationships that sustain life.
